Becoming a webcam model isn’t a decision anyone takes lightly. Just like when you’re making any important decision, you’ll need to do some research to work out the pros and cons.
If you’re reading this then you’ve hopefully done your research and – with the pros outweighing the cons – you’ve decided that you’d like to become a webcam model, and want to know how to go about making this happen. This quick guide will help set you on your way.
Step 1 – Make sure you’ve got everything you need to get you started
Technology
To work as a webcam model, you’ll need a desktop or laptop computer. It doesn’t have to be the fastest, top-spec machine, but it will need to be capable of streaming your cam without buffering. You’ll also require a reliable broadband internet connection.
It goes without saying that you’re going to need a webcam! It’s really going to be worth investing in a good quality webcam, because having poor video or sound quality will more than likely put off your potential clients. My favourite is the Logitech c920, as this can stream a widescreen video in high definition, and the two microphones give a much better sound quality than the cheaper webcams with a single mic. Available for around £50 from a number of online stores, this is well worth the money.
Your webcam space
It’s super important for you to feel comfortable in your working environment. Lots of webcam models simply work from their bedrooms, which is fine, but if you do have a separate room then using this would be recommended, as you wouldn’t have to make your bed or clear away your laundry before starting work, and you won’t need to pack away all your toys, props and computer stuff when you’ve finished.
Whichever way you go, it’s really important to keep your webcam space clean and tidy – certainly those parts which will be visible on screen – as you need to be the centre of attention on cam.
Lighting
Lighting often gets overlooked by newbie webcammers, but good lighting can make all the difference. If you’ll be working during the day, and your webcam room has good natural light, then this should be good enough. If you don’t have decent natural lighting however, or if you’re going to be working at night, then you’re going to have to rely on the lights in your room. You might need to experiment moving the lights around the room to get the best out of it. If you’re still not happy with the lighting then you should think about investing in a 3-point lighting system. Entry-level equipment can be had for less than £100, which shouldn’t break the bank.
Clothing, props and toys
If you’re going to be having naughty adult fun with your clients, then don’t forget you’re going to need something sexy to wear. eBay and Primark are fabulous for lingerie which won’t cost a fortune. You’ll probably also want to use some props and toys.
Step 2 – Create your webcam persona
You’ll need to think about how you want to come across when you’re on cam. I would definitely recommend being yourself, as it’s quite tricky maintaining a made-up persona over a long period of time. Your clients will also be able to tell pretty quickly whether you’re being genuine or not, and nothing puts them off more than someone who’s clearly faking it.
Take some time to choose your stage name. I like to think of this as your alter ego! You’ll need to choose one that nobody else is using, and it needs to be memorable so that your clients will be able to find you by name. The name you choose will be your brand, so best avoid a name that you might regret in a few months time.
Before starting out it’s important that you set your boundaries as well. Everyone’s morals are different, so remember that you are always in control, and you never, ever have to do anything that you are not comfortable with.
Step 3 – Sign up with a webcam agency
It’s critical that you sign up with a good webcam model agency that’s going to help you earn as much money as possible. When applying, you’ll be asked to provide a UK passport or driving licence as ID to prove that you’re over 18, and that you are who you say you are. Once accepted, you’ll need to familiarise yourself with the terms and conditions just to make sure that you keep yourself safe and don’t go breaking any of the rules. Check out the tutorial videos as well, as these are really informative and will give you some excellent advice.
Next, it’ll be time to set up your new profile, reflecting the points we covered in Step 2. You’ll need to upload at least one good quality headshot and one profile pic, making sure that you keep things tasteful (ie no nakedness – you don’t want to show off all your assets straight away!)

After following these 3 steps, you’ll be ready to hit that Broadcast button and start your career as a webcam model, being your own boss and earning great money.
